What You Need to Know About Iron Deficiency

Your blood can’t do its job without iron.

Question: How does oxygen circulate through the body? You breath it in and your bloodstream carries it, right? Well, that’s half right, but there’s an important piece of the puzzle you may not know about: iron. Iron is a vital component in healthy red blood cells, and without it, your blood wouldn’t be able to get oxygen where it needs to be even with a lungful of air. When you’re lacking in iron, you become anemic, weakened from poor blood circulation. If you’re chronically lacking in iron, you may suffer from iron deficiency anemia, or IDA.

IDA doesn’t manifest for any single reason. It could have something to do with your diet, it could be due to blood loss events like menstruation, or any other number of factors. While it does occur to women a little more frequently, anyone can experience IDA. The important thing is not to try and self-diagnose. This isn’t a problem you can fix with some cod liver oil. If you’re feeling the symptoms of anemia on a semi-regular basis, go see your doctor so they can start you on some medication.

Luckily, IDA is very easy to treat. With some medication and possibly some dietary adjustments, you won’t be in any danger, and nothing invasive will be required. It will take a while to get your iron levels stable, though, so don’t expect IDA to go away over night.
