One Of The Many Reasons Surgeons Are Amazing

The extraordinary skills of a surgeon

Surgeons hold lives in their hands during surgery and have the skills to perform true medical miracles but their talent doesn’t come overnight. With many years of training, they’ve acquired more skills than we tend to know about, like their amazing knot tying skills.

Stitches are common from the doctor’s office to the operating room, so one of the many skills required included knot tying. Here are some of the knots that are needed on a regular basis in and out of the operating room.

There are three ways to tie a knot including square knots (used for tying strong square knots), one-handed (hardest to learn but most efficient), and instrument (most important for suturing). The square knot is one of the key essential knots which ties in opposite directions to lock a knot.

Another common knot used is a slipknot but it brings both ends of the knot into the same direction which helps prevent air knots and to secure the knot without locking the knot.
