Most women we know like to play with makeup, even if they aren’t sure how to professionally apply it. And even if you do know how to apply it, it can be overwhelming to find a product that works well for you and your skin type, or to find the healthiest products out there.

To complicate matters further, the United States doesn’t regulate several substances that are used when creating beauty products. Below, learn a little bit more about the six harmful substances that may be lurking in your beauty products.

  1. Phthalates. These are mostly used in fragrances, and they may cause fertility/reproductive issues.
  2. 1-4 Dioxane. This is a known human carcinogen that is often used in the manufacturing of cosmetic products.
  3. Talc and Asbestos. These are known as “shine enhancers” and are included in many makeup products.
  4. Coal Tar Dyes. These are uses as darkeners, and in specific cases, they can lead to blindness.
  5. Triclosan. You can find this in many cleaners, and it can cause thyroid problems.
  6. Sulfites. Certain individuals should be weary, as sulfites can cause scalp irritation.

When choosing makeup products, try to steer clear of these potentially harmful substances. Even better? Opt for all-natural products.
