Sustainability through style

With the need for new and cheap clothes in our world today, the rise in fast fashion has made the fashion industry second place amongst the world’s largest polluters. Clothes lead to be about 100 million tons of waste every year aside from the pollution of water by acids and dyes used for clothes production.

These days, fast fashion brands create clothes for every week of the year and people rush to buy them without proper thought on how the clothes were made: the workers who had to work in substandard conditions or the products used for them.

In a bid to make fashion more sustainable in a way to making our world better, several brands have started making eco-friendly clothes even high fashion brands like Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood but it is essential that we also find ways to reduce our impulsive buying to making every wardrobe decision sustainable. Here is a list of things that you could incorporate.

Buy Classics:
With about 30 items of clothing that are purposely selected, everything you need for your everyday outfit is available. A capsule wardrobe is the way.

Swap or mend:
It is necessary to at least have basic sewing skills so you would be able to mend your clothes when they tear instead of buying new ones. Instead of dropping your old clothes, you could switch with your friend who has a similar style to you.

Wash less:
It is better to air dry your clothes or cold wash without using the dryer so they last longer.

Be Shopping Conscious:
Only buy what you need, learn to be able to create wonderful outfits from mixing and matching your old clothes. Only buy what you know will be versatile and last for a long time.
