As we approach the end of the year, self care and fitness goals tend to go out the window.

With the 4000 calorie Thanksgiving meal coupled with all of the sweet treats of the Christmas season, a few extra pounds are inevitable for most of us. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

It’s easy to push off self care until next year as part of the infamous “New Year’s Resolution.” But I’m telling you now to not wait. Get a head start on your fitness and self care goals and it will only increase your chances of success next year. If you still want to wait until next year, how about 81 reasons to inspire and motivate you to take care of yourself now?

At 81 years old, Fred Murphy probably shares a lot of similarities to your own grandpa. He’s friendly and kind, and he’s doing his best to inspire people everywhere to take care of themselves. He does this through his local crossfit box. I know what you are thinking: 81 years old and he probably just has to show up and people clap. But what you don’t know is that at 81 years old, Fred Murphy is a literal beast.

Last year, Fred had to work through 7 different surgeries in one year. But he didn’t let that stop him from maintaining his fitness goals. He ran three 5k’s, three 10k’s, a half marathon, a 20 mile and 30 mile trail run, one crossfit competition, and the Crossfit Open. These days, you can see him at the local crossfit gym inspiring and motivating others that are half his age. But don’t feel bad for him. Feel bad for his partners that often struggle to keep up. So next time you think about pushing off your goals for the new year, think again.
