Craving some late night junk food? It may not be your fault.

Lack of sleep almost always triggers a junk food binge the next morning. But why is that? Scientists at Northwestern University have concluded through studies that the olfactory system is responsible for those food binges.

When you are short on sleep, your body becomes hyper sensitive to food odors in an attempt to help you survive. But after that, your brain takes over and starts to guide you toward the food that will provide you with the most energy. After translation, that becomes the food with the most calories and that is typically junk food.

So the solution to help curve the binge after a sleepless night- don’t fight the hunger but be smart in your food choices. You should eat to regain some energy but you don’t have to eat donuts or pizza. You can choose food rich in nutrients and carbs that will fill you up without blowing you up.
