How to Embrace Slow Fashion as a Shopaholic

You can be stylish while still being sustainable.

The Slow Fashion movement embraces Ethical fashion (human rights), Eco-fashion (environment), and Lasting fashion (the value of clothes). We were taught to be consumerists, so when people started talking about slow fashion, it did cause some panic. Going from fast to slow fashion is a big transition, and embracing it entirely can be stressful. Here’s how to get rid of fast fashion and still enjoy your shopping without guilt.

Second Hand and Vintage

Vintage is always in, and it can give your style some unique finishing touches. From a scarf or a hat to the pair of vintage Manolos, style icons from all over the world know that shopping vintage is an experience.

Secondhand clothes and accessories can be found everywhere, from Poshmark to ThredUp and eBay. The fascinating fact is that secondhand could supplant Fast Fashion in a decade. It’s not just about shopping; it is about reselling the items you no longer need. Or worse, the things you bought and never wanted to wear.

To get involved and make some extra money, your closet needs a makeover. This is rather simple: take out all your clothes and accessories and make three piles. Keep, donate, and sell. Then you log in to one of the websites and start taking photos. If you haven’t used it in six months, you don’t need it. It’s a great exercise, and decluttering your home will help declutter your mind.

Local Designers and Small Brands

Fast fashion chains closed the doors to many great upcoming, small brands and their designers. Luckily, not all. These pieces are not mass produced in sweatshops, you will support the economy and people who want to make the fashion world better. You are buying long-lasting items, and their value won’t drop like a hot potato once the season is over.

Saving Money

Buying a pair of handmade shoes costs money, but once you find the ones you know you will wear because they are your style and just comfortable enough, you won’t need a new pair for a long time. In fashion, a long time can mean a year or two seasons. However, it is an improvement compared to buying all the trendy mass-produced items. Combined with selling stuff you no longer need, your credit card will be grateful.

Mindful Shopping

Being mindful means being present. If you are shopping to get rid of stress, you will end up with a bunch of items you don’t need. Why? Because you aren’t buying what you like or need. Shopping isn’t a cure for anything, but it can be a fun activity. Practice your shopping habits: instead of just clicking on that buy now icon or giving the salesperson your credit card, wait. Take a deep breath, get out of the store, and take a walk. Wait for an hour, for a day. If you still want that sweater or that bag, buy it. But whatever you do, don’t indulge in impulsive shopping. It’s bad for your wallet, even worse for your mind.
