Happiness Jar: A Small Step Towards Better Life

Learn to appreciate yourself and others with the help of a simple jar!

A happiness jar is inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of Eat, Pray, Love. It’s nothing but a simple reminder of all the good things we experience every day. Some call it gratitude jar as well, and we are going to help you start one today.

It’s quite simple: get a jar, and every day write down something you feel grateful for. You can write short notes, or go into details; it doesn’t matter. Keep putting these little letters into your special jar until it’s full. You can also open it when you’re feeling down to reflect on good memories and kind actions. We aren’t talking an “I bought a house” type of thing. We really are talking about the kindness of a stranger, nice meal, a cute drawing your child made you…

Though this technique came from a novelist, it’s been adopted by many psychotherapists. Now it’s recognized as a tool for practicing self-care and wellness. There are no rules, except you should keep writing the notes daily. Other than that, you can also put some more symbolic memories. It could be tickets from the movies or concerts or a napkin from the date of your dreams.

Speaking of dates, some suggest that the happiness jar can be a useful tool to improve relationships. Instead of writing down only your experiences, which are still valid, you also add the little things you love about your partner.

Being grateful leads to mindfulness and living in the present moment. That’s the sure road to happiness, and you don’t even have to put a significant effort into it.

Keep your jar safe, personalize it as a small DIY project, and don’t throw away the messages once you open it. Instead, make a good old fashioned scrapbook, because happiness is unlimited. We need it, we crave and desire it, so why not make a diary of happy memories?
