Miami is Making Vegan Cuban Bread

If you’re Cuban and vegan, then you’ve probably been having a hard time enjoying your own culture’s food because of the ingredients and dishes that are native to Cuba. That pretty much means no black beans, no Cuban sandwiches and no delicious fresh Cuban bread.

Manteca, or lard, is used in just about every Cuban dish. Traditional black beans require ham hock in the stew while Cuban sandwiches contain ham, roasted pork and cheese. The ingredients of Cuban bread include water, flour, yeast, salt – and unfortunately for the vegan – lard.

But that’s all about to change because Vicky Bakery is taking a stand for the Cuban vegan. One of the oldest and best-known bakeries in South Florida, Vicky will introduce a vegan version of their Cuban bread at all 16 of their locations.

Fernando Oramas, one of the owners of the family-run business, helped create the plant-based recipe. The vegan version of Vicky’s well-loved Cuban bread replaces lard with vegetable oil.

The announcement of a vegan Cuban bread has been met with mixed reactions, with those fully supporting the age-old recipe saying that to remove the lard from Cuban bread is to remove everything that makes it truly Cuban.

The regular Cuban bread loaf costs $1.35. The vegan Cuban loaf is $2.50.
