She may be a Duchess, but she dresses like a Queen
Meghan Markle, the American actress who became the Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry of England, is 2019’s top fashion icon. Fashion search engine Lyst said Meghan is the most-searched “power dresser” in the world. Lyst reported that when Meghan Markle wore a statement outfit at any time this year, Internet searches for similar clothing items shot up by over 200 percent.
One of her most popular outfits was the blueprinted Manolo Blahnik dress she wore on an official visit to South Africa to meet with anti-apartheid leader Desmond Tutu.
“The report analyses queries, page views, and sales metrics across six million fashion products from over 12,000 online stores, alongside the global media coverage and social media mentions generated by the year’s biggest brands and trends,” The Standard of the UK reported. “The report revealed that in 2019, Markle’s stylish ensembles sparked, on average, a 216 percent increase in searches for similar pieces.”
Fashion bloggers say Markle has a different fan base than her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. While Kate has a classic and decidedly British style, Markle is more “fashion-forward,” says fashion reporter Elizabeth Howard.
“There has long been a contingent of Kate fans drawn to her classic choices and penchant for British designers. Meghan, with her minimalist yet fashion-forward pieces from an array of fashion houses, has brought in a new audience,” Howard said.
