Whether you decided to exercise more, gossip less, go to bed early, or find a new job, one thing is for sure: New Year’s resolutions can be a burden. Statistically speaking, 23 percent of people already broke their resolutions in the first week. In the next six months, that number rises to 54 percent. To avoid becoming part of those numbers, you can try the following tips.

No one has said that the boundaries you set are definite and that any deviation automatically means giving up. If a task that you set at the beginning of the year becomes difficult, adjust it to your preferences and capabilities. For example, if you decide to exercise daily in the New Year but find no time to do so, reduce your exercise to three days a week, and then schedule the rest of your time for other activities.

Also, one of the most important tips when it comes to New Year’s decisions and keeping them is the possibility to pause the decision. We are not talking about a week or a month without, for example, recycling. Instead, take a day of rest from thinking too hard about the decision you made and from the schedule you created for yourself. Even athletes have their cheat days, so why couldn’t you? Still, there is a danger that pausing will delay the activity indefinitely, and you eventually give up the decision. The goals you set must be worth as much as you allow yourself.

Finally, social networks could play a significant role in keeping New Year’s resolutions. If you share your new goal on your Instagram profile, you’re sure to find support, and once it’s out, giving up is a little harder. Also, it can be a good thing to share your decisions on social networks and connect with friends with similar goals and, ultimately, give each mutual support.

It’s not about keeping some resolution you wrote down during New Year’s Day. It’s about maintaining a promise to yourself, and these resolutions are an excellent exercise. It’s their real value, and the more you manage to adopt the new plan, the better it will be for your self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
