Time to unbutton your pants, loosen that belt, and prepare to stuff your face with more food than you can possibly imagine.

Thanksgiving is one of the most popular holidays in the United States. More than 85% of Americans celebrate Thanksgiving and for a good reason: the food! The weird thing about Thanksgiving is that all of the Thanksgiving foods are available year round in grocery stores across the US, but only one time a year do people actually eat them. Here are some crazy Thanksgiving facts to put the time of the year into perspective.

Around Thanksgiving, approximately 46 million turkeys are eaten for Thanksgiving. That’s exponentially higher than any other time of year. Everyone’s favorite, green bean casserole, is responsible for 40% of Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup sales for the whole year. For you cranberry lovers, approximately 80 million pounds of cranberries will be consumed for the meal. That’s the equivalent weight of a nuclear class submarine. And if you think that’s a lot, over 214 million pounds of potatoes will fill the bellies of hungry Americans for the single meal. As far as dessert goes, 19 million pies are pre-ordered for the special meal. That doesn’t even include those people who make pies the hard way.

Along with all of that information, according to a YOUGOV poll, Americans will eat an average of 2,500 to 4,500 calories for their Thanksgiving meal. That’s twice the recommended daily consumption all in one meal. But if you factor in all of the foods, desserts, and the minimum of two plates for the meal, it’s easy to see how the calories can add up fast.
