What is the Met Gala 2020 theme?
The Super Bowl of fashion, better known as the Met Gala, just unveiled their upcoming theme and everything to expect from the biggest night in fashion.
Curator of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton, drew inspiration from the 1992 film “Orlando” by Sally Potter inspired by the Virginia Wolfe novel under the same name. The theme is “About Time: Fashion and Duration” in an open-ended approach of “reimagining fashion history as fragmented, discontinuous, and diverse.”

There is a specific scene that spoke to Bolton was the scene when the main character played by Tilda Swinton enters a maze wearing 18th-century women’s robe à la Francaise style gown and as she progresses through the maze her clothes transform when she re-emerges from the maze in 1850s England. Bolton is planning on changing how we think about fashion history by dividing 160 women’s garments into two sections through the Met exhibit.
The first section will feature a timeline of looks consisting of only black looks from 1870 to 2020 on a timescale of modernity and the second section will feature a majority of white looks with added pops of color. This year the Met Gala is hosting over 600 attendees including fashion icons and celebrities.

This year the co-chairs along with the Vogue magazine editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour, are Nicolas Ghesquière (creative director of the Louis Vuitton fashion house) along with famous actors including Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. The Met Gala started as a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute and marks the beginning of the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition.
This event generates eight-figure sums and raised a record-breaking $15 million for 2019, with tickets priced around $30,000 to attend with tables costing $275,000 each. The Met Gala will take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on the first Monday of May.
