An Italian Dessert That’s Effortless and Elegant

Affogato, meaning “drowned” in Italian, is a classic dessert that blends two simple pleasures—ice cream and espresso. It’s creamy, warm, and rich, perfect as an after-dinner treat or a quick indulgence when you need something special.

Homemade Affogato

Ingredients
  

  • 1 shot of freshly brewed espresso about 30 ml
  • 1 scoop of good-quality vanilla gelato or ice cream
  • Optional toppings: shaved chocolate crushed biscotti, or a drizzle of liqueur (like amaretto or Kahlúa)

Method
 

Prepare the espresso
  1. Brew a fresh shot of espresso using your machine, moka pot, or any method you prefer. It should be hot and strong to balance the sweetness of the ice cream.
Scoop the gelato
  1. Place one generous scoop of vanilla gelato or ice cream in a small glass or dessert cup. Chill the glass beforehand if you like a slower melt.
Pour and serve
  1. Slowly pour the hot espresso over the gelato right before serving. The ice cream will begin to melt into the coffee, creating a silky, creamy mix.
Add a finishing touch
  1. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or top with a small biscotti for texture. For adults, a splash of liqueur adds an elegant twist.
