Travel Smart, Travel Sustainable

As the saying goes, leave only footprints.

These days everyone is concerned about going green and helping the planet, and with good reason. You recycle, you bring your own reusable bags to the grocery store, and you try to buy other recycled products, but going green isn’t just for trash and clean energy. Here are a few ways you can travel green while enjoying the adventure for yourself and others for years to come.

For those of us who are on the “going green” bandwagon, have you ever considered how you can travel and still help protect the planet? First off, if you can travel by any other means than an airplane, then you are already on the right track. Airplanes, as you probably already know, consume a large amount of fuel (hence the price of the airline tickets). So save yourself the cost of the fuel tax and other astronomical fees by taking the train or some other means. If you must fly, try to get a nonstop flight so that you can reduce the amount of pollution takeoff and landing.

If flying is still your choice of transportation, you can still help by packing light. Not only will taking a carry on versus a large suitcase save you time at the baggage claim and possibly the added cost of a checked bag, but the smaller bag actually saves fuel for the plane. Smaller bags weigh less, thus making the plane lighter and reducing the amount of fuel necessary for the trip. It may not seem like a lot but it all adds up in the end.

Now that you’ve made it to your destination, there are a few things you can do while you are there to keep the sustainable travel rolling. One, you should skip the classic “I survived…. ” t-shirt and hat and opt instead for something a little more substantial and lasting. Try a local art or craft that will remind you of your trip without one day being thrown away because it has faded or has holes in it. Along the same lines, eat and drink local too. Chain restaurants create more pollution than local establishments. Finally, opt for hotels that support environmentally friendly practices. These things may not seem like much, but if everyone did it, we would have sustainable travel for generations to come.
