This Cheese is Not For The Faint Of Heart

Foodies can be seen as extremists at times. This cheese is one of the reasons why.

Good food can be found almost anywhere, if you know how to look. Foodies have been discovering the hidden gems in the food world forever. It wasn’t until recently though that the word “foodie” actually became a thing. Foodies are known for seeking out something that they can add to their food repertoire. Often times, the weirder the better. It’s simple- foodies love food. Anything and everything food, they just can’t get enough. Foodies tend to seek exotic or unique foods all over the world. But one place in Italy might just be a step too far for the avid food lover- maybe even an extreme food lover.

In the middle of nowhere in Italy, a small, quiet town called Sardina produces one of the most controversial cheeses of all time. What makes this cheese so different? It’s called Casu Marzu and it’s literally cheese filled with maggots. In Italian, Casu Marzu translates to “rotten cheese,” and it’s pretty obvious why. In fact, it’s been dubbed the world’s most dangerous cheese and has even been outlawed throughout Europe and in most places around the world.

But that isn’t stopping the cheesemakers in Sardinia from created this unique and rare cheese. To this day, they still make the cheese the same way that they always have for the last century. The way the people of Sardinia see it, they are merely carrying on their own family tradition and cheese-loving heritage. And besides, no one has ever died from Casu Marzu. So next time you find yourself in the foothills of Sardinia, maybe you can cross this one off of your bucket list.
