Celebrities caught taking money for promoting fake charity

In a recent sting operation, celebrities are being implicated for accepting money to support a fake charity including former Olympian and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner. Through the talent agency, MN2S, Jenner accepted a payment of $25,000 to share an Instagram post and participate in a photoshoot to support the Cleaning Up Plastic Pollution in Africa (Cuppa).

The only problem is that Cuppa is a fake charity set up by Channel 4 from the U.K. for the purpose of a documentary that’s apart of an investigative series “Dispatches.” The host of the documentary, Anthony Barnett, explained the premise of the sting operation for a segment entitled “Celebs For Sale: The Great Charity Scandal.”

The goal of the investigation is to reveal the unseen side of charities that pay celebrities thousands of dollars to promote with the goal of gaining more donations through the trusting public. The practice of paying off celebrities for promotions goes against most charity and moral ethics but is still a common practice with charity organizations.

Burnett says during the investigation he talked with several celebrities who expressed concern about the practice of paying celebrities for their support but none of the celebrities were willing to speak out. Jenner wasn’t the only celebrity caught up in this investigation, English football manager and former player Harry Redknapp is also involved.

Rednapp agreed to support Cuppa at the cost of around $19,000 (£15,000) to post once on Instagram with an additional $6,000 (£5,000) to participate in a photoshoot with a contract for approximately $25,000 (£20,000). A week after the agreed deal, Rednapp posted a picture wearing a Cuppa shirt and hat on his Instagram account.

Rednapp’s lawyer claims that Rednapp would never knowingly accept payment for his normal charity work and only agreed to this payment after being informed that the charity was supported by private investors. Rednapp’s lawyer also claims that his client was paid less than the initial quote by MN2S.

Jenner’s lawyer claims that it is well-known that celebrities are paid for doing promotional work for charities and that this is the first time Jenner accepted an offer to be paid to promote a charity, intending to donate the money that was intended for her payment to other charities she supports. Jenner’s lawyer went onto say that his client felt “targeted” for her well-known TV personality to be exploited to increase viewing figures.
