What to Wear to an Interview

Try these tips for a perfectly polished interview look.

Everything from makeup, to hair, to your outfit can make all the difference in whether or not you get hired. Dress the part, and the job is yours. Here are some tips on how to dress for an interview.

They say that you need to dress for the job you want, not the job you have, and that is perhaps the biggest piece of advice we can pass on to all of you. When going on an interview, keep in mind the position you are interviewing for, the company you are interviewing with, and of course your own personality. For example, those interviewing for a position in fashion may take more liberties with both makeup and clothing than those interviewing for a position in finance or law.

The first thing you will need is a well-fitted, tailored suit. Pick a style and cut that flatters your figure, in a color that matches your complexion. Opt for a matching skirt or pantsuit, paired with a button-down blouse that complements the color of the suit. When I purchased my first suit, I went with a dark grey for my pale complexion, and a modern cut which made me feel more hip and stylish.

Your shoes should be sensible, because you won’t win any points if you are teetering in too-high heels. Save those stilettos for the club, ladies, and stick with a heel height that is no more than three inches, in a shoe that comes in neutral black, navy, or beige.

Hair should be kept out of your face. There are a number of chic and elegant hairstyles to accomplish this, from ballerina buns to sleek ponytails. You want the focus to be on your face. One of the staples of a good interview is making lots of eye contact, and you can’t do that if you are constantly fidgeting or tucking hair behind your ears.

Makeup should be natural and pretty. Less is more; you don’t want to take any focus away from your direct gaze and the words you are saying. My daily staples are the same products I use when interviewing: blush, a dab of bronzer, mascara, a bit of eye liner, and lipstick. Keep your color palette neutral and let your personality shine through.
