Some secrets and shocking facts we didn’t know about Princess Diana

Princess Diana is a royal icon bringing beauty, style, and grace to Buckingham Palace. Though she was often in the public eye, there are certain things you may not have known about her private life. Here are a couple of things you may not have know about the late British Princess.

Growing up she loved dancing and dreamed of being a ballerina but was discouraged being told she was “too tall.” Diana wanted to become a professional dancer and studied ballet under her teacher Anne Allen. In an interview in 2017, Allen said “She [Diana] had dance in her soul, I realized the pure enjoyment it gave her. She loved the freeness of being able to move and dance … I could see it helped to alleviate her emotional life.”

Though her main duties were being a Princess, Diana also worked as a teacher and a nanny before meeting her husband Prince Charles. Before attaining royal status, Diana worked a variety of odd jobs including being a nanny and school teacher, with a salary of $5 per hour.

When Princess Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, Diana was the first royal bride to have a paying job until she got engaged to an heir. Kate Duchess of Cambridge was the first royal bride to have a university degree.

Not many people know but Princess Diana and Prince Charles were closely related, being distant cousins. Technically they’re 16th cousins once removed and are both descendants of Tudor King Henry VII. Prince William and Kate Middleton, Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are also technically related being 12th cousins once removed through royal descendant Sir Thomas Leighton who is William’s 12th generation great-grandfather and Kate’s 11th.

Before marrying Prince Charles, Diana met with him only 12 times. At the time of their engagement, Diana was only 19 and Charles was 32. Prince Charles’ father Prince Phillip pressured him to do the right thing.

Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress broke records and made history. Diana’s ivory taffeta wedding dress was created by a wife and husband design team, David and Elizabeth Emanuel, creating a gown featuring over 10,000 pearls and a 25-foot-long train. The train of the wedding dress broke the record for the longest royal wedding train.

Diana chose an unorthodox royal parenting style for raising her children, determined on raising Prince William and Prince Harry to live as “normally” as possible. Diana would have them experience things royal children weren’t normally accustomed to such as seeing a movie in a public theater, going to fast-food restaurants, going to amusement parks, and playing with friends their age.

Princess Diana’s favorite band was the Swedish disco group, ABBA. For Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding party in honor of Princess Diana, they played some ABBA hits.

Princess Diana will always live in our hearts as the people’s princess but one thing was for sure, no matter her royal title she always stayed true to herself.
