New Year’s Eve: Expectations VS Reality

The pressure of having a perfect evening ruins everything!

New Year’s Eve is so near, we can already feel the next morning’s regrets. Despite your best intentions, New Year’s Eve rarely goes the way we planned it, so here’s how to have the best time, even though it’s not going to be the night that changed our lives.

First, let’s talk about money. In case you bought an outfit, hopefully it’s something wearable. Otherwise, it’s going on the regret list. If you are going out, you don’t have to look all sparkly and new. Do your makeup and hair the usual way, throw on a little safe dress (in any color), and a pair of cozy shoes. If you want to dance the night away, you don’t want to make a mistake called: “I wore new shoes for NYE and ended up with blisters.” That would be another regret.

If you’re staying in with some friends, it’s important to look decent, but you are among friends, so relax. It’s just another evening, except you won’t get a cab or Uber any time soon. Might as well feel comfortable, because you’re stuck. Try not to drink or overeat. And if you’re not a big drinker, why would you have to become one on New Year’s Eve?

Since New Year’s Eve brings people together, whether we want them around us or not, it can be triggering for anyone suffering from panic attacks and anxiety. Don’t change your plans to feed the fears, instead try to be close to one or two people you trust the most. If you do feel extremely anxious, do breathing exercises. Then start counting from 300 to 1 in a foreign language. Distraction isn’t the best idea in curing panic attacks, but since you’re trapped in a club or at some party, you can try it.

Most importantly, don’t drink! It will make things worse because alcohol is a depressant, and instead of getting clarity, you’ll feel dizzier. If anything else fails, sit in a corner and play Sudoku for a while.

We survived Christmas gatherings with our families, but what if we have to survive New Year’s Eve as well, just days later? Try to be as polite as possible, but don’t let toxic people ruin your night. Instead, your focus should be on friendly faces. Don’t be scared if you hurt someone’s feelings. It would be best if you always put yourself first.

In case you haven’t made any plans, and it’s just you and your cat, that’s more than okay. For many, it’s an ideal way to get some peace. Lock the doors and binge-watch your favorite movies, and go to bed early. And don’t worry about what some might say: it’s refreshing to spend your New Year’s Eve in cute PJs, meditating, having an evening for yourself.

It’s not that we shouldn’t have expectations in life. It has more to do with a simple fact that the New Year is another evening. Unless you are in a romantic comedy, you have better chances of meeting someone cute when they aren’t intoxicated.

That being said, we hope you have a lovely evening, not perfect or idyllic, just good enough, so the list of regrets doesn’t ruin your first day of another January.
