Internet Saftey For Kids

Snapchat may seem like a fun app for kids to use but there are a couple of things you should know before letting your kids use Snapchat. Snapchat has a long history of allowing content that isn’t deemed family-friendly on its app even though the app is rated for ages 12+.

The purpose of Snapchat is to send messages designed to disappear after viewing which doesn’t necessarily protect kids from predators on the social media app. The internet-safety watchdog group, Protecting Young Eyes, wrote an article recently highlighting that with just a few taps on the screen, younger users can stumble on inappropriate content from Snapchat’s home page.

Popular adult entertainment companies feature stories on Snapchat’s home page including tutorials on how to access the adult content without having to exit Snapchat with little to no detection. This leaves parents wondering what to look out for on Snapchat.

On most parental filters for iPhone or Android users don’t monitor browsers for app store users like Facebook and Snapchat. This allows for the ability to access adult websites within these apps that are dangerous and can often go undetected.

With a few clicks, you can go from the Snapchat story to the premium page from where you can click other links to other users’ accounts that would otherwise be blocked by other parental monitoring programs instead of opening in an browser exclusive to the app.

Though there are programs and apps to filter what your kids are exposed to, the only way to truly protect your kids from inappropriate content is to limit and closely monitor your kids’ app time. For more, check out the video above.
