How Milla Jovovich Escaped the Curse of Child Stars

How to win in life despite all odds.

Milla Jovovich started modeling when she was 9, then went to sign the Revlon contract when she was 12. It’s safe to say she never had a childhood, which made her a rebellious teenager, and resulted in some difficult decisions. Barely in her teens, Milla was already modeling for all the famous designers; she was described as baby Linda Evangelista, due to the similarity to the 90s supermodel. However, she had other plans, and they included music and acting.

My regular life today is reading books, making dolls houses, sewing dolls with my daughter, and barbequing.

Today, at 44, Jovovich is happily married to Paul W.S. Anderson, and she’s about to become a mother for the third time. She was born in Kyiv, to Bogich Jovovich, a Yugoslavian doctor, and Golina Loganiva, a Soviet actress. Her family first moved to the UK, then to California. After her parents divorced, Milla and her mother started to chase the American dream. And now, it’s safe to say that Milica Natasha Jovovich is one of the very few lucky ones. Her dreams came true, but it’s a weird and intriguing story.

Modeling killed me.

When Jovovich was 16, she married 21-year-old Dazed And Confused co-star Shawn Andrews. The marriage was annulled after two months, and Jovovich made her first record. However, everything changed when Milla turned 19.

Why have a model on the front of your magazine when you can have Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, or Hilary Swank? Because those girls are intelligent and talented, people are interested.

Luc Besson was looking for a perfect woman for The Fifth Element. It was the first proper movie for young Milla, and the world fell in love with her. So did the director, and by the time she was 20, Jovovich was a wife again. That didn’t last, so 18 months later the couple called it off.

I am a strong Ukrainian girl, that is why I work a lot.

During the period between 2003 and 2008, she worked alongside Carmen Hawk in designing the women’s fashion line, Jovovich-Hawk. Despite meeting her husband and having babies, Jovovich continued to work, mostly in action horror movies, and she never gave up music as well. Her first steps reminded everyone of Brooke Shiels, another successful child who turned into a successful adult. Though the stories are somewhat similar, young Milla was only five or six when she stepped into the US, and she didn’t speak any English. Everything was happening so fast, but she doesn’t complain. She rarely speaks of the past and seems to enjoy being a mom the most.

I just want to make one really good movie a year. And when I die, to know I was honest as an artist.

Paul W. S. Anderson and Milla married seven years after they met. The couple is actively involved in several charities. Jovovich didn’t speak directly about her experience in the #MeToo movement. Still, she did start a petition to demand that lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret does more to guarantee the safety of its models.

Despite growing up in showbusiness, Jovovich managed not just to stay sane, but to grow up and become an inspiration to all the young women who didn’t have the perfect start. And more than that, she didn’t let herself become just another pretty face.
